Every fall, the first cool morning, I face the same little problem

I want to be cozy, and I want to look like I made an effort. For years I had to pick one.

I reach for something soft to throw over my tee, and what I have is a choice I do not love. The old cardigans have gone bobbly and shapeless. The fleeces make me look like I am off to do the gardening. And a stiff jacket is far too much for a walk or a coffee.

So most mornings I put on the least bad option and spent the day not quite feeling like myself. At 65, that is a silly thing to do to yourself every single day from September to March.

Then a woman at the farmers market turned up in a soft red plaid, thrown over jeans and a plain tee, and she looked warm and put-together at the same time. I stopped her. She was kind about it. That is how these ended up in our shop.

We are a small family shop here in Fairhope, Alabama, running since 1984. These are the handful of things we refused to compromise on.

1.It feels like a blanket, and still looks nice

That is the yarn. Soft and brushed, blanket-warm the moment you put it on, with a full sleeve that covers the arms down to a snug ribbed cuff. The tops of the arms stay covered and warm, which at my age is exactly what I want as the weather turns. So you get the comfort of your softest blanket and still look pulled-together at the door.

2.Nineteen plaids, and one is never quite enough

That is the trouble with them. They are so soft, and the colours are so lovely, that people come back for a second. There is a soft green, a classic red, a warm orange, a gentle purple, a bright blue — nineteen cozy plaids in all, each as soft as the last. One to go with everything you own, and a different one depending on your mood.

3.It skims instead of gripping

These are cut relaxed with a longer, curved hem, so they drape softly and skim over the middle instead of gripping it, and sit kindly over the hips. Nothing pulls across the back, nothing rides up when you reach for something on a high shelf.

4.Wide arms, cuffs that stay where you put them

Cut generous the whole way down the arm and gathered into a ribbed cuff, so nothing pulls at the top and nothing slides back down the moment you push the sleeves up to do something. Wide where you want room, snug where you want it to hold.

5.It makes the rest of your outfit look considered

This is the part I did not expect. Thrown open over what you already wear, one soft plaid layer turns plain and practical into cozy and considered. No new outfit needed. At 65, having one warm layer that makes everything else look nice is worth its weight in gold.

6.It comes in real sizes, S to 3XL

Cut generous on purpose, to fit the woman rather than the other way around. If you are between sizes, take the smaller one — there is plenty of room through the body already.

We priced them at $169.95 when they launched. But for America's 250th Anniversary, we wanted to give something back to the women who keep our doors open — so every cardigan is going out at a fraction of that.

Every order leaves Fairhope folded in a kraft paper mailer with a handwritten note from one of us tucked on top. It is a small thing. We have found the small things are the ones people remember.

I do not usually write things like this. But I know exactly what that first cool morning feels like when nothing in the wardrobe is both warm and nice. One soft plaid layer fixed it for me, and I have not gone back.
