The cardigan that made me look like I had made an effort

On the oversized knit with the big gold buttons — the one I throw on over anything and get asked about, without having done a single thing to deserve it.

I am 65 years old, and I have a drawer of cardigans that all do the same job badly. They are warm. They are soft. And every one of them says the same thing about me, which is nothing at all.

What I wanted was the thing a certain kind of woman has — you know the one — who turns up to a coffee in trousers and a knit and somehow looks finished. I could never work out what she was doing differently. I assumed it was money, or bones, or being forty.

Then my friend Diane arrived at a lunch in a navy cardigan with five great gold buttons down the front, worn open over a plain cream top, and I finally saw it. It was not her. It was the buttons.

We are a small family shop here in Fairhope, Alabama, running since 1984. The cardigan is called the Elara, and these are the handful of things we refused to compromise on.

1.The gold buttons do all the work

We went large and we went proper gold-tone. Five big round buttons with a hammered face that catches the light, set down the front of a plain knit. That is the entire trick: one bit of real jewellery on something otherwise simple, and the whole outfit reads as considered. You are wearing a cardigan. It looks like you planned something.

2.A collar, not a limp neckline

We gave it a proper folded collar with enough weight in the knit to hold its shape. Most cardigans finish at the neck with a floppy band that sits differently every time you put it on. This one frames the face, sits the same on Tuesday as it did on Sunday, and means you do not need a scarf to make it look like something.

3.Roomy sleeves that never grip the arm

We cut the sleeves generous and gathered them into a ribbed cuff, so they are wide all the way down the arm and then settle at the wrist. Nothing pulls at the upper arm, nothing rides up, and you can push them back to the elbow when you are doing something and they stay there.

4.Oversized on purpose, with a curved hem

We cut it boxy and easy through the body so it skims instead of sitting on anything, and we finished it with a softly curved hem that falls at the hip rather than cutting straight across. It goes over a top, over a shirt, over a dress. Open it is a layer; buttoned it is the whole outfit.

5.A knit with weight to it

We chose a soft ribbed knit with real substance — the kind that hangs properly and does not go thin and sad at the elbows after a month. It is warm enough to be the only layer on a cool morning, and soft enough at the collar that you forget you have it on.

6.Ten colours, and a size for you, S to 2XL

We make the Elara in ten colours — navy, ivory, light blue, pink, beige, burgundy, olive, brown, black and grey — and size it true from S to 2XL, every size cut with the same easy, oversized shape. Take your usual size. And if it is not right when it arrives, send it back within thirty days for a full refund.

Why we're clearing it now

We priced the Elara at $180.00 when it launched. But for America's 250th Anniversary, we wanted to give something back to the women who keep our doors open — so every cardigan is going out at a fraction of that.

Every order leaves Fairhope folded in a kraft paper mailer with a handwritten note from one of us tucked on top. It is a small thing. We have found the small things are the ones people remember.

I do not usually write things like this. But I have worn the Elara to three things this month where I would previously have stood in front of the wardrobe for twenty minutes, and each time I put it on over what I already had on and left the house. Twice somebody asked me about the buttons. At 65 that is not a small thing. It felt like getting a piece of myself back.
