Somewhere along the way, the color drained right out of my closet

Everything had gone quiet and careful — navy, gray, beige. The safe things a woman my age is supposed to wear.

I would stand there on a bright morning feeling exactly as muted as it all looked, and reach, again, for the beige. At 65, I had rather faded into my own wardrobe.

There was a reason for it, and it took me years to admit it. My arms had changed, the way arms do, and I had decided they were no longer mine to show. So every June I faced the same trap: the cool, pretty dresses left my arms bare, and the only things that covered them were far too heavy for the heat.

A woman in my church group kept turning up all through August looking comfortable and covered, and finally I asked her. That is how these ended up in our shop.

We are a small family shop here in Fairhope, Alabama, running since 1984. These are the handful of things we refused to compromise on.

1.Sleeves that cover the arms, without the heat

Soft sleeves come right down over the tops of the arms — the exact part most of us have been hiding — in a light, breathable fabric that still lets the air through. Covered and cool, at the very same time. No cardigan, no cooking.

2.Deep, real pockets

There is a small freedom most of us have forgotten about entirely: walking out the door without a handbag. Every pretty dress I owned either had no pockets at all, or a shallow little slit that gaped open and held nothing. These have deep pockets set right into the side seams, deep enough for a phone and reading glasses both, without a bulge or a sag.

3.A cut that skims, never clings

A softly gathered waist releases into a relaxed skirt that moves with you and settles again when you stop. It skims right over the middle instead of gripping it. It does not stick to your back in the car and it does not crease into a rag by lunchtime.

4.Prints people stop you to ask about

The florals are painted and placed — branches sweeping up one side, blossoms that read as one whole picture instead of a pattern stamped across a sheet. Happy and pretty, never garish. The kind of thing that has people smiling and asking where you found it, and somehow it still looks grown-up and elegant rather than like you are trying too hard.

5.Twenty-one prints, one for every mood

A calm sage, a soft blush, a deep lavender, a clear sky blue, a warm golden yellow — twenty-one prints in all, every one of them with the same deep pockets and the same kind, easy shape. A little color back in the closet has been such a joy.

6.Real sizes, S to 5XL

Cut generous on purpose, to fit the woman rather than the other way around. True to size — take your usual.

Why we're clearing them now

We priced them at $169.95 when they launched. But for America's 250th Anniversary, we wanted to give something back to the women who keep our doors open — so every dress is going out at a fraction of that.

Every order leaves Fairhope folded in a kraft paper mailer with a handwritten note from one of us tucked on top. It is a small thing. We have found the small things are the ones people remember.

I do not usually write things like this. But I know what it is to quietly stop wearing dresses and tell yourself it does not matter. It did matter, to me. One easy dress handed the colour back.
